Medicare is a national health insurance program in the United States, begun in 1965 under the Social Security Administration and is now administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Medicare is for qualifying individuals, including people age 65 or older, younger people with disabilities, and people with End Stage Renal Disease.
It is important to understand eligibility and enrollment periods to avoid late enrollment penalties and gaps in coverage. Individuals that are actively working and have creditable employer health coverage, may be able to postpone Medicare enrollment without penalty for themselves and their spouses.
Medicare offers Savings Programs and an Extra Help Low Income Subsidy to individuals that qualify. Individuals that are dually eligible Medicare and Medicaid, have a severe or disabling chronic condition as specified by CMS, or institutionalized individuals may qualify for special needs managed care plans. Special Needs Plans provide care coordination services and tailor benefits to best meet the specific needs of the groups they serve.
Medicare can indeed be a confusing maze of complexity and uncertainty. With the constant upward trend in Medicare and prescription drug costs, it's essential to navigate through health care options. Additionally, every individual's circumstances are unique, resulting in diverse needs.
